  • Geocaching……

Posted on May 24th, 2003 admin No comments

YES, it was a geocaching afternoon & SAM accompanied. One of the clever geocaching people has placed a new cache close by and I want to be the first – I gave everyone a chance as it has been out there since the 10th. We went to Pokagon State Park and parked at the Inn. At this point we used trail 3 to trail 7 and walked the whole loop (about 3 miles of moderate terrain). Along the way we located the cache and signed the log and took a travel bug plus a gold heart. We left a Rubic’s Cube and shoe laces. On the way home we stopped by for ice cream – what a treat as we have not had this for a long time.

  • A case of not being late.

Posted on May 24th, 2003 admin No comments

This blog piece is dedicated to SAM, whos birthday was yesterday 5/23/03! Now understand that I am not late & no I did not forget. I remembered and printed out a nice little Happy Birthday in MS WordArt Multi color and stuck it on the door. I guess this must have got me about a plus 1 points and I am slowly extracating myself from the deep pit of minus 50 points I got the other day for God only knows the reason. Anyway, I digress.

The Friday AM went so fast – something like this – 0600 breakfast, shower, shave & brush teeth, my email reading ( 30 to 40 spam’s), go get POB mail and get new cellular prepay card, check monster.com for 100 mile radius & send 2 resumes in response to job ad’s. JES arrived for the trip to KDPA and the Lear45 trip to Beaver Island for the weekend so it was off to the airport and the 1.3 hour flight to KDPA. I got back home about 1800 hrs local and went for the 1 hr walk on Fish Creek Trail. Well, to make a short story long, I wrote up this blog and did a proof read and forgot to save it and poof it was gone into the vapor at 2245 hrs & I was too tired to re-do it then – so, you see I am not late nor did I forget I just need to add a “draft” section to the blog software.

  • New code needed!

A dreary overcast drizzley day greeted me at 0600 as well as the strident sound of an electronic telephone. The party asked, “Do you want to go to Orland for the American Legion Breakfast this morning?” Answering in the affirmative resulted in a quick shave, water on the hair and a baseball cap to cover the mess and out the door in a few minutes: Oh yes, for those dentists – I brushed my teeth to cover up the morning breath of pizza and garlic of the night before. I hasten to add that in the rural midwest we are allowed, like cowboys of the west, to wear hats in public places and while eating. I do not think this has always been the case but has been for a long time. From the breakfast I went to the airport because my number 1 radio took a dive yesterday while returning from KDPA. A quick troubleshooting procedure resulted in determining the culprit was the KX155 as a substitute radio worked OK. Ok, I guess now it goes back to the factory for repair. Later 4 sure…..

  • Bummer Sunday!

Posted on May 19th, 2003 admin No comments

Man what a bummer day Sunday was! I got up at the crack of dawn ready to fly over to Bryan for the fly-in. I was at the airport by 0730 hrs, got the airplane out and waited for the guys to arrive. Everyone arrived by 0800 (the firm scheduled takeoff) except one person. We waited until 0835 and I gave up – then another person gave up – so two of us gave up and left to go back to the doughnut shop. When we got there we were the only ones in the place. It was a NO doughnut morning. The rest of the day did not fare much better and I was depressed all the rest of the day until blessed sleep overtook my body.

This was an interesting article about flying – at least to me and since I host this blog I can put what I want here. “This week’s “Voice” is Howard Smith of Lakeland, Florida. Howard was interviewed on April 2nd, 2003 at Sun ‘n Fun in Lakeland, Florida. Howard’s aviation career began in 1968. He enlisted in the Army with the intent to fly helicopters…..

  • Second Try!

Posted on May 16th, 2003 admin No comments

Second time around! I did this once but got so carried away with closing open windows I destroyed my work of words. As I was saying before, I returned from Detroit via US12 that I picked up at US23S. This is a picturesque way to get to M49 that I take back to Indiana. No race was happening so it was smooth sailing and I stopped a few minutes at the roadside park west of route 127 – there is a lake you cannot see from the road and it is a nice place. Try this sometime and do not worry it is almost exactly the same time as taking I94/I69. Another nice place is on M60, east of I69, is Homer, MI because it has a nice park on the Kalamazoo River with an old mill building.

  • Meigs Field

Posted on May 15th, 2003 admin No comments

Here is my little contribution to Meigs Field support and confrontation of Mayor Richard Daley for his unbelieveable gall and egotism………… “It may have faded from the headlines (in the mainstream press, anyway) but the fight to reopen Meigs Field (CGX) is far from over. Just this week, three aviation organizations rallied their members to keep the pressure on Chicago Mayor Richard M. Daley. On its Web site, EAA notified the flying public that The Friends of Meigs Field and the Meigs Action Coalition are in need of support from “EAA members and aviation enthusiasts who want to see Meigs Field preserved.” NBAA and AOPA also advised their members of pending legislation that could be crafted to reopen Meigs. In testimony on Monday before the Illinois Senate General Assembly, NBAA officials opposed legislation that addresses Illinois airport needs without including the reopening of Meigs. David Vornholt, a member of the NBAA’s Airports/Heliports Committee, testified in support of Meigs for the NBAA at a May 12 committee hearing on Senate Bill (SB) 802. AOPA Vice President of Regional Affairs Bill Dunn was also on hand to tell the Illinois Senate panel Monday evening that they cannot ignore Meigs Field as the legislature contemplates changes to the Chicago-area system of airports. “Chicago’s airports are not independent; they operate as a system,” Dunn said. “When considering the future of Chicago’s air transportation system, you must not ignore the need to reopen Meigs Field.”

  • Stroke threat?

Posted on May 14th, 2003 admin No comments

Bad news for chiropractors! For some reason I never trusted their claims but was this based on my bad experience? Probably, but the chiropractor should have known better than to treat a back hyper-extension injury with more extensions. “Study links stroke risk, some spine treatments………” Hum, come to think of it my mom said I started acting strange when I became a teenager – maybe this is the reason?
