  • The Male Vole & Monogamy

DNA Tweak Turns Vole Mates Into Soul Mates
Promiscuous mammals become stay-at-home dads in a study. There’s no cure yet for humans.

By Alan Zarembo, Times Staff Writer

Scientists working with a rat-like animal called a vole have found that promiscuous males can be reprogrammed into monogamous partners by introducing a single gene into a specific part of their brains.

Once they have been converted, the voles hang around the family nests and even huddle with their female partners after sex.

The results suggest that “a mutation in a single gene can have a profound impact on complex social behavior,” said Larry Young, a neuroscientist at Emory University who reports the results in the current issue of the journal Nature.

The research, Young said, could help shed light on monogamy

  • I, Robot

I cannot wait until “I,Robot” comes out next month. I read the complete series last winter while in FL working. The local used bookstore had the series in paperback for about $10 so it was a done deal. Sometimes I find Isaac Asimov books a trifle slow in spots and I have to force myself to speed read thru those areas but the creative writing and unsolvable plots prevail – to bad there are not hundreds more in various series.

  • Summer is here…

Posted on June 8th, 2004 admin No comments

Summer has arrived in Grand Rapids. The weather has been moderate here and has been pretty cool since I arrived here from Florida. Initially it was a shock but now the weather seems hot. My schedule has been reasonably intense but rewarding in the marketing role. I have learned new material too and this keeps things fresh.

I wish I could make this blog a bit more interesting but I have not been Geocaching and have not taken any photos recently. I guess it boils down to time to do these things.

  • Where time has gone or Where has time gone?

Posted on June 3rd, 2004 admin No comments

Another month has come and gone. It is hard to believe that I have not
written a blogline in that time. It seems like my time has been consumed
with work in Grand Rapids and traveling to/from, work around the yard and
family affairs. A lot has happened since my return from Florida and the
coping mechanisms have crept into the daily life, i.e. spending all
available spare time reading books on sailing offshore as an escape.
Anyway the blog suffers a lot from this.
