If he  stumbles on a startled bear at close range, the retired sheriff\u2019s deputy  wants to know the gun is within quick reach, in case something stronger  than pepper spray is needed. Wilson isn\u2019t the type who likes to take  chances; he\u2019s the type who plans ahead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/pocket-image-cache.com\/direct?resize=w2000&amp;url=https%3A%2F%2Fassets.bwbx.io%2Fimages%2Fusers%2FiqjWHBFdfxIU%2FijWt89yGtacc%2Fv0%2F-1x-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"330\" height=\"264\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>\n    \n                    Before setting foot on this path, he unfolded a huge <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fs.fed.us\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">U.S. Forest Service<\/a>\n map and reviewed the route, Trail 267. He put a finger at the \ntrailhead, which was next to a ranger\u2019s station, then traced its \nmeandering path into the Crazy Mountains, a chain in south-central \nMontana that\u2019s part of the northern Rockies. Like many of the trails and\n roads that lead into U.S. Forest Service land, Trail 267 twists in and \nout of private properties. These sorts of paths have been used as access\n points for decades, but \u201cNo Trespassing\u201d signs are popping up on them \nwith increasing frequency, along with visitors\u2019 logs in which hikers, \nhunters, and Forest Service workers are instructed to sign their names, \ntacitly acknowledging that the trail is private and that permission for \nits use was granted at the private landowners\u2019 discretion.\n                \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/getpocket.com\/explore\/item\/this-land-is-no-longer-your-land\">https:\/\/getpocket.com\/explore\/item\/this-land-is-no-longer-your-land<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Brad Wilson is following a forest trail and scanning the dusky spaces between the fir trees for signs of movement.
