  • Sandy Oak Olive Orchard

Today is a wonderful day with clear skies and mid 80’s. Just before lunch we decided to pick up a bullet point on the to-do list for San Antonio: Sandy Oak Olive Orchard. I’ll put the link down below but for now just a bit of a synopsis.

One of the first commercial olive orchards in Texas, Sandy Oaks Orchards®, owned and operated by Saundra C. (Sandy) Winokur, lies just off of I-37, 20 minutes south of San Antonio, Texas. The website has lots of pictures and that is just what we saw in sparkling clean surroundings. What is not shown is the large fields of Bluebells and what looks like yellow Canola flowers

While best known for olive trees, olive oil and the various olive oil and olive leaf based skin care products it produces, Sandy Oaks is also celebrated for its emphasis on hospitality and educating the public on the benefits and various uses of olive oil. Sandy Oaks frequently hosts educational seminars and tastings of olive oils from around the world.

“Join us for a wonderful farm to table meal, visit our tasting room to sample our culinary products and the full line of skin care products we produce on site, or scroll through our nursery to pick up an olive tree or two for your backyard. Take a “Day-cation”, enjoy a small respite from the bustle of every day life and experience country living.”

We ate there too and had an Antipasta (for 2) and olive leaf tea. The anti[pasta was served on a flatboard and was real tasty. Not a large portion, but nevertheless, I was sufficiently full. The tea was $4 per glass and the antipasta was $15 so it does not qualify as a snack but the ambiance made up for everything. Real silverware was used and that helped too.

  • Today’s big event

I’ll tell your right at the start that our big event of today was eating at Burger King. On the menu was two Whopper meals for $8.99 with the coupon. We like BK and eat there often. My Whopper is sans lettuce, tomato and mayo but with extra onion and SAM’s is similar.

Later in the afternoon, I fiddled with organizing the RV storage bins. I need to redo this activity in the port side forward area. The plastic tubs that hold things are not optimal and there is a lot of wasted space.

  • Social Democracy vs Capitalism

Indoctrinated with propaganda, we Americans think that democratic socialism is the antithesis of capitalism. Nothing could be further from the truth! Capitalism, the free market, private enterprise, entrepreneurship is alive and well in Denmark. Do a little research on what Forbes has to say.

  • San Antonio

We pulled into a SE Antonio RV Park tp make some RV repairs and to see the Alamo and The River Walk. We have been waiting for a sunshiny, moderately warm day – tomorrow may be it.

The parallelogram windshield wiper system broke in Austin. The idler arm pivot on the coach failed such that the acorn nut holding on the coach end of the arm came off. this allows the arm to freely float and the wiper does this crazy dance. We found a machinist that said he would make us a new part and we are waiting on him now.

Today I recharged the water softener using a new scheme. We learned a lot and what to do and not do. Below is the general diagram of what I am talking about. The salt goes into the inlet canister and a fine stream of water is started to put the dissolved salt into the softener.

After most of the salt is dissolved while the pencil thick stream of water at the Output water is running, stop the water flow and wait 5 minutes. Then run a stream of water into the softener that is about 3/8″ diameter for 5 minutes. Taste the water after the 5 minutes and it does not taste of salt you are good. If it does then run a while longer and taste until no salt is tasted. You are then recharged.
